When is Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s second child due?

Yesterday, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry shared the brilliant news that Meghan is pregnant with the couple’s second child. That’s right – Archie Harrison is set to become a big brother. Inevitably, the question on everybody’s lips now is: when is the due date?
The California-based couple announced the news alongside a gorgeous black and white picture of the two of them relaxing outdoors, Meghan lying on the grass and Harry cradling her head in his hands. In the image, which was taken remotely via an iPad by photographer and friend of the couple, Misan Harriman, Meghan’s growing baby bump is clear for all to see.
A spokesperson said: “We can confirm that Archie is going to be a big brother. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are overjoyed to be expecting their second child.”
While the couple didn’t announce their due date, speculation has already begun as to when we might expect Archie’s little brother or sister to make an appearance. From the photo, it looks as though Meghan is already a number of months into her pregnancy.
The size of her bump would imply that she is between five and six months’ along, which would mean their baby is due in May or June. Archie’s birthday is 6 May, while the couple married on the 19 May, so if it was the former, it’d make one busy month for Harry and Meghan.
One reason why Meghan and Harry might have waited until they were further into the pregnancy to share their news with the world could be the fact that last year, the pair suffered a devastating miscarriage. In a moving essay shared in the New York Times, titled ‘The Losses We Share’, the Duchess of Sussex described in painful detail the moment she and her husband Prince Harry lost their unborn second child.
One morning in July 2020 – a day that “began as ordinarily as any other day” – Meghan described going about her typical routine. “After changing [Archie’s] diaper, I felt a sharp cramp. I dropped to the floor with him in my arms, humming a lullaby to keep us both calm, the cheerful tune a stark contrast to my sense that something was not right,” the royal wrote.
“I knew, as I clutched my firstborn child, that I was losing my second.” The couple quickly went to hospital, where it was confirmed their child had passed away in the womb.
Going through such a traumatic experience often makes couples wary about sharing their news too soon, and some often wait until the 20 week scan has passed. In light of the couple’s announcement, baby charity Tommy’s said: “It can be hard for those who have lost babies to believe that won’t happen again, or they may feel guilty for being excited about a new arrival while grieving a sibling.”
If Meghan and Harry have waited until just after the 20 week scan to announce their news, then we could expect the second royal baby Sussex to arrive around mid-June. However, if the family have chosen to delay the announcement a few weeks beyond their mid-pregnancy scan, then the due date could be far earlier than that.
Following the birth of Princess Eugenie’s son last week – and given that Zara Tindall is currently pregnant with her third child and expecting in “early 2021”, Meghan and Harry’s baby will be the Queen’s eleventh great-grandchild. We hope the rest of Meghan’s pregnancy is smooth and healthy, and look forward to the birth announcement later this year!
