UAB fall practice report: Healthy and hatching plans

The third day of fall camp is in the books for the UAB football team.

The brutal heat of August is still to come but the Blazers enjoyed another day of moderately seasonal temperatures while still in shorts and shells.

Here are some observations from the limited access period provided to the media:

— Considering the number of veterans and returning starters, UAB head coach Bill Clark says the implementation of the playbook is well on its way: “It starts with pushing through the third day, we practice hard and find ways to push through that and take care of the body. Now you’re starting to get the volume of playbook and putting all that together.

— The team has not suffered any major injuries through the first three days of camp and Clark attributes that to summer conditioning: “We got a couple of minor things but we did a great job in the summer, Coach Lyle (Henley) and those guys. You still have to work yourself into playing shape but they came in and are taking care of their bodies.”

— Jermaine Brown Jr. looks to be UAB’s Swiss army man this season and was working with both the running backs and receivers during the morning session, as well as the special teams unit. The junior started his career as a scout team wideout before having a breakout true freshman season at running back. He took reps at receiver during the spring and is one of only two returning players with return experience.

— Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College teammates and summer enrollees Keshawn Moore and Quincy McGee were working second-team reps at right guard and tackle, respectively. Along with seasoned veteran Jakoby Jones, the left side saw Zaire Flournoy, Trey Bedosky and Eli Richey working behind first-team Kadeem Telfort and Colby Ragland.

— Tejhaun Palmer and Austin McGhee continue to have a solid camp, running behind the quartet of Trea Shropshire, Samario Rudolph, Ryan Davis and Ra’Jae Johnson-Sanders during the morning session.
