KFC Is Working On 3D-Printed Chicken Nuggets, So The Future Looks Bright
From Delish
KFC has been switching up their menu in recent weeks, and if the transition from potato wedges to fries wasn’t staggering enough, the chain has even more ideas to continue providing delicious options in new and creative ways. But change can be a good thing, and currently in the works is a process for…3D printing chicken nuggets. The future is now, people!
The fast food chain partnered up with 3D Bioprinting Solutions, a research lab located in Moscow, Russia. The process would use a small amount of animal cells and plant-based materials to produce chicken meat in a lab. According to Veg News, the plant-based materials include ingredients like bread crumbs and spices provided by KFC, so the chicken nuggets will still be flavored like other menu items. The use of 3D printing also eliminates the need for mass slaughter of animals for production.
In a press release, KFC explained that the goal of the new chicken nuggets is for them to be close in taste to other KFC items while also being environmentally friendly:
The idea of crafting the ‘meat of the future’ arose among partners in response to the growing popularity of a healthy lifestyle and nutrition, the annual increase in demand for alternatives to traditional meat and the need to develop more environmentally friendly methods of food production. The project aims to create the world’s first laboratory-produced chicken nuggets. They will be as close as possible in both taste and appearance to the original KFC product, while being more environmentally friendly to produce than ordinary meat.
A final product is set to be ready for testing by this fall in Moscow. In the meantime, those who want to try something a little more eco-conscious can gear up for wide releases of the KFC Beyond Fried Chicken. A total of 50 more restaurants in California are testing the product, so here’s hoping a nationwide release is on the horizon.
