Rams’ Darrell Henderson: Eyeing three-down role?

Coach Sean McVay believes Darrell Henderson (undisclosed) is an every-down back, noting that durability is the concern, not talent, Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic reports.A split workload would be one way to help Henderson stay healthy now that Cam Akers (Achilles) is out for the season, but a three-down role also is possible, especially if the Los Angeles Rams more or less stick with their current group of young, unproven running backs. As a 2019 third-round pick with 197 career touches in 28 games, Henderson is easily the most experienced and pedigreed of the group, which otherwise consists of Xavier Jones, Jake Funk, Raymond Calais and Otis Anderson. McVay said the Rams aren’t in the market for a veteran running back, but he easily could change his mind once training camp is underway, especially if Henderson struggles or gets banged up again. Henderson did miss a portion of the offseason program with an undisclosed injury, after finishing last year on IR with a high-ankle sprain.

Rams’ Darrell Henderson: Thrust into larger role

Darrell Henderson (undisclosed) is set for a larger role after teammate Cam Akers suffered a torn Achilles on Monday, though the Los Angeles Rams could also make a move to add backfield help, Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic reports.Akers and Henderson both had their moments last season, but it was the former who finished strong while second-year back Henderson ended his season on injured reserve with a high-ankle sprain, the same injury that brought his rookie campaign to an early end (albeit to the other leg). There was no report of surgery after the more recent injury, though Henderson did miss part of June minicamp with an undisclosed issue. The 2019 third-round pick now enters his third pro season with a huge opportunity, heading a backfield where the other players are either seventh-round picks (Raymond Calais, Jake Funk) or undrafted free agents (Xavier Jones, Otis Anderson). Of course, the Rams will also look into external options to upgrade their backfield, considering Henderson’s durability is a question mark even if they believe in his talent. Akers, meanwhile, will focus on returning to health for 2022.

Rams’ Darrell Henderson: Limited in offseason practices

An unspecified injury limited Darrell Henderson’s participation in the Los Angeles Rams’ offseason program, ESPN.com’s Lindsey Thiry reports. After suffering a high-ankle sprain in Week 16 last season, Henderson missed the regular-season finale and the playoffs. He should’ve had plenty of time to make a full recovery during the offseason, but it’s nonetheless possible his limitations at practice are related to the same issue. Henderson is a clear favorite for the No. 2 spot behind Cam Akers in the Rams’ backfield, especially after Malcolm Brown signed with Miami this spring. The depth chart otherwise consists of young players with minimal NFL experience — and all were either seventh-round picks (Jake Funk, Raymond Calais) or undrafted (Xavier Jones, Otis Anderson).

Rams’ Darrell Henderson: Set to play second fiddle

Darrell Henderson is expected to slot into a complementary role behind No. 1 running back Cam Akers this season, Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic reports. After an underwhelming rookie campaign, Henderson made a notable impact last season. He piled up 405 rushing yards and 109 receiving yards through a six-game stretch, showcasing his fantasy upside and proving he can handle a modest workload. However, it was a short-lived run, as 2020 second-round selection Cam Akers got healthy and proceeded to take over as the lead back for the Los Angeles Rams down the stretch and in the playoffs. Even with Akers poised to handle the majority of work out of the backfield again in 2021, Henderson should still be involved, and he could again be a go-to fantasy option if Akers were ever to miss time. Additionally, while the Rams could bolster the position in the upcoming NFL Draft or through free agency, Los Angeles likely has more pressing needs.

Rams’ Darrell Henderson: Shows potential in spurts

Darrell Henderson rushed 138 times for 624 yards and five touchdowns and caught 16 passes for 159 yards and another score through 15 games during the 2020 regular season. He sustained a season-ending, high-ankle sprain in Week 16.The Los Angeles Rams were expected to utilize a committee rushing attack to start the season with Henderson having a significant role. Rookie Cam Akers sustained a rib injury in training camp, and after veteran Malcolm Brown handled the lead role in Week 1, Henderson ascended to the top of the depth chart and accumulated 405 rushing yards and 109 receiving yards over the next six games. Akers got healthy, though, and the committee approach returned until the rookie proved to be the superior talent in Week 12. Akers piled up 645 rushing yards and 147 receiving yards through Los Angeles’ final seven games, including the playoffs. Still, Henderson projects to have a role next season. Brown is a free agent, and even with Akers likely locked into a hefty workload, Henderson’s too talented and athletic to be uninvolved in the offense.

Rams’ Darrell Henderson: On injured reserve, as expected

The Los Angeles Rams placed Darrell Henderson (ankle) on injured reserve Tuesday. As expected, Henderson will miss the regular-season finale and at least the first two rounds of the playoffs, assuming the Rams are able to qualify for the latter. In addition to Henderson hitting IR, the overall outlook for the offense has taken multiple hits, with Jared Goff requiring surgery on a broken and dislocated thumb Monday, Cam Akers tending to a high-ankle sprain of his own, and Cooper Kupp (undisclosed) landing on the reserve/COVID-19 list Tuesday. In the case of the backfield, if Akers joins Henderson on the sideline Sunday versus the Cardinals, Malcolm Brown will lead L.A.’s backfield, with Xavier Jones and Raymond Calais potentially getting reps as well.

    Rams’ Darrell Henderson: IR expected

Darrell Henderson suffered a high-ankle sprain in Sunday’s 20-9 loss to the Seahawks and is expected to be placed on injured reserve, Eric D. Williams of SI.com reports.Henderson logged 62 yards on 12 carries before exiting Sunday’s loss. He now will miss the team’s regular-season finale against the Cardinals, and it remains to be seen if he will be available for a potential postseason berth. Cam Akers (ankle) still could be available against Arizona, but if he isn’t look for Malcolm Brown to see the majority of the work out of the backfield.

Rams’ Darrell Henderson: High-ankle sprain feared

Darrell Henderson is believed to have suffered a high-ankle sprain during Sunday’s 20-9 loss to the Seahawks, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.Henderson was forced out of Sunday’s divisional loss in the fourth quarter, logging 12 carries for 62 yards before his exit. It now appears as though Henderson’s ankle issue could be significant, and with No. 1 running back Cam Akers already sidelined due to the same injury, Los Angeles’ backfield could be severely lacking in depth Week 17. Malcolm Brown, Xavier Jones and Raymond Calais are currently the Los Angeles Rams’ only healthy tailbacks.

Rams’ Darrell Henderson: Hurts ankle Sunday

Darrell Henderson left Sunday’s game at Seattle with a left ankle injury, Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic reports. The Los Angeles Rams are already without No. 1 running back Cam Akers due to a high-ankle sprain, and now his replacement is tending to an ankle issue of his own. Henderson is doubtful to return to the field, so he seems destined to end Week 16 with 12 carries for 62 yards. With Akers and Henderson sidelined, L.A. has turned to Malcolm Brown out of the backfield.

Rams’ Darrell Henderson: More opportunities on tap Week 16

Head coach Sean McVay said both Darrell Henderson and Malcolm Brown will be “heavily involved” in the Los Angeles Rams’ game plan Sunday in Seattle with top back Cam Akers (ankle) ruled out for the contest, Cameron DaSilva of USA Today reports. “I mean they’ll both get work,” McVay said of Henderson and Brown. “As far as the specifics, I’m not really sure. We’re just getting into the initial parts of the game plan.”Before Akers emerged as the team’s clear top back over the past three games, the lead option out of the Los Angeles backfield had been a difficult one to predict in any given week. Expect that to be the case this weekend, as McVay was unwilling to anoint either Henderson or Brown as the No. 1 option, nor was he willing to divulge how the work may be divvied up between the two. For fantasy managers looking to roll the dice on one of the two backs this week, Henderson represents the more intriguing option, as he’s displayed more explosiveness as a runner and receiver than Brown, who is valued mainly for his skills in pass protection. Henderson averaged 4.8 yards per carry and 8.0 yards per target through the Rams’ first eight games, but his efficiency has taken a big hit — along with his overall opportunities — so far in the second half of the season (3.4 YPC, 4.3 YPT in six games).
