Tips from psychologist for dealing with fear of shots

Those interested in the vaccine but afraid of needles can use about a dozen different psychological techniques to cope with the fear.

Dr. John Ernst, a psychotherapist with a practice in West Allis, frequently treats patients with a variety of fears and phobias. He said the fear of getting a shot ranks high on many patients’ lists of worrisome life events.

The fear, he said, can range from mild situational distress to the daunting-sounding trypanophobia, an extreme fear of medical procedures involving injections or hypodermic needles.The good news is it’s potentially treatable.
