Kids’ Food Basket hosting free fall festival Oct. 10 in Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Kids’ Food Basket is celebrating the end of the harvest season with its first ever Fall Festival on Sunday, Oct. 10.

The community is invited to enjoy fall treats, lawn games, activities and learn about volunteer opportunities at the Kids’ Food Basket Farm, 1300 Plymouth Ave. NE, from 2-5 p.m.

Festivalgoers can also taste raw honey from the farm’s bee colony.

Activities will highlight the non-profit organization’s educational programs that focus on eating and growing healthy produce.

“At Kids’ Food Basket, our farming programs provide tens of thousands of servings of fresh fruits and vegetables to under-resourced families,” President and founding CEO of Kids’ Food Basket Bridget Clark Whitney said in a statement.

Kids’ Food Basket, a nonprofit organization, provides evening meals called sack suppers to 8,800 students in Kent, Ottawa, Muskegon and Allegan counties daily at 52 schools, according to its website.

The organization harvested over 100,000 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables from its farm this year.

Items like cucumbers, green peppers and snap peas were added to sack suppers. Additional produce was distributed to social organizations the Community Food Club, the St. Alphonsus food pantry and Noor’s Heaven.

“We develop partnerships and collaborations that reduce food insecurity and increase food equity in West Michigan,” said Whitney. “We are grateful that this event brings the opportunity to share this critical work with our community.”
