Dubs Lose Backup Center As Injury Bug Continues To Prey On Them

KEY POINTS

  • The Golden State Warriors lose Marquese Chriss for the season
  • James Wiseman will have to play extended minutes
  • Steve Kerr confirms Draymond Green is not yet fit to return for the Warriors

The Golden State Warriors continue to experience tough luck as far as keeping their roster healthy.

Already without Klay Thompson and Draymond Green, the Dubs suffered a big blow with Marquese Chriss going down with a broken right leg.

According to sources cited by Shams Charania of the Athletic, the 23-year-old forward will miss the remainder of the season. Chriss sustained the injury during practice last Saturday and is set to undergo surgery later this week.

Warriors head coach Steve Kerr said that the injury happened in a 12-minute post-practice scrimmage. The 8th overall pick of the 2016 NBA Draft landed awkwardly.

They will know more about the timeline of Chriss after his surgery, according to a report from ESPN.

“Obviously, we are all devastated for him, for the outcome… so we don’t know how long he’ll be out. He’ll have surgery and we’ll know more after the surgery. But I just feel so horrible for Quese,” Kerr said.

It was a sad development for the 6-foot-9 cager who seemed to have found a new home with the Warriors. In his first two games for the 2020-21 NBA season, he averaged 6.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, and an assist in 13.5 minutes of action.

He played behind top rookie pick James Wiseman, with Kerr hoping he would improve behind the 7-foot-1 frosh.

Instead, the Warriors find themselves now losing a big man, and such could require Wiseman to step up and play more minutes.

Kevon Looney, returning from several injuries the past years, will need to contribute as well. Owning a partially guaranteed deal, the Dubs are likely to explore the market for another winger with Chriss out for the season.

Aside from Chriss and Thompson, Golden State followers are eager to find out when Draymond Green will return. The 30-year-old has yet to play a game for the team this season due to a right foot injury.

Kerr divulged that the three-time All-Star will continue to sit out a couple of more games as he works himself back into shape.

“We just felt that from a conditioning standpoint it made more sense to give him the next two games off. He’s not going to play tonight or in Detroit [on Tuesday]. He’s doing really well; the foot has healed nicely,” he bared.
