WESTFIELD — Westfield Academy and Central School District will celebrate Homecoming “with a twist” this year in order to provide a safe environment while hosting enjoyable and memorable activities said Secondary Principal Corey Markham.

Homecoming festivities will be held the second week of October and will include the traditional PepRally/Battle of the Classes, a Chiavetta’s chicken dinner and the Homecoming Dance, said Markham.

Beginning today, students will celebrate Spirit Week. Today is Disney Day; Wednesday is Wild, Wild West Day; Thursday is Be a Hero Day, as well as the traditional Toga Day for Seniors; and Friday is Class Shirts Day.

The three homecoming games will be held at the high school, with boys’ soccer at 7:30 p.m. today, girls’ soccer at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday and the football game on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Westfield’s homecoming parade will include ninth through 12th grades and will proceed from Moore Park to the school, Markham said.

“Grades nine to 12 will work with their class advisors on their float,” he said. “Each grade level float will participate in our Homecoming Parade, starting at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.”

Homecoming festivities will also include a Chiavetta’s chicken dinner on Friday from 3:30 to 6 p.m. or until sold out, whichever comes first. Dinner will be picked up in the high school cafeteria, Markham said. He asks that everyone remember that face masks are required for entry into the building. Dinners are $12 each and tickets can be purchased in advance from members of the band, he said.

Markham said that the goal this year is to “provide a safe, healthy environment which allows our students to enjoy the festivities and create memories.” While moving forward with all of the traditional activities, he said, there will be “a twist” on the PepRally/Battle of the Classes and the Homecoming Dance that will be held outside this year.

The Battle of the Classes/Pep Rally will be outside, not held in the gym, Markham said.

“If the weather does not cooperate, the Pep Rally will be postponed,” he said.

“Our Homecoming Dance will be held on Saturday, Oct. 16, from 6 to 9 p.m. on our tennis court,” Markham said. “Our dance is only for students in grades 9-12.”

Markham noted that all attendees must complete a health survey upon arrival and have their temperature screened. Also, he said that, regardless of vaccination status, everyone attending the dance is encouraged to wear a face covering when a distance of 6 feet cannot be maintained.

Markham has reminded parents that the administration does not know how a positive COVID case will impact the attendees at any of these events.

“There is the possibility that the Department of Health may place your child in quarantine if an individual who attends the dance or any Homecoming festivities tests positive for COVID-19,” he said.

Markham also noted that the plans are subject to change based on new health directives that may be issued by the state or county.

“However, we hope that this return to our traditional Homecoming week will provide our students, staff, and community with an opportunity to celebrate,” he said.
