The Kevin Hart-Approved Hydrow Rower is an Excellent Peloton Alternative

Exercising during the pandemic has been different, to say the least. Especially for those who spent most of their time at the gym or in group classes. The quarantine predicament meant not only finding a type of exercise we liked, but something we would, and could do, at home. For actor and comedian Kevin Hart, that meant the subscription-based rowing machine, Hydrow.

In October 2020, Hart channeled his passion for fitness and search for a full-body, home-based workout into becoming the Creative Director of Hydrow. The company’s founder and CEO Bruce Smith believes rowing is perceived as an elitist sport, and created Hydrow to make it more accessible—at home or in the water. His hope is that Hart will help make it more egalitarian.

Of course, like any exercise machine you bring into your home, this is a commitment. Just a rower starts at $2245 but you’ll still have to pay a monthly fee for the digital workouts. The $38 streaming membership is less than the gym and gives you access to live and on-demand rowing classes, as well as yoga, Pilates and strength training. Taken in tandem, Hart sees Hydrow as a lifechanging workout, especially for those who may not be runners or bikers.

The rowing machine itself follows Peloton’s lead and houses a 22-inch Bluetooth-enabled, touchscreen monitor. And, like Peloton, it lets you compete against the online Hydrow community and offers leaderboards and weekly team races. In short order, it’s meant to elevate the experience with encouragement and motivation.

As the price intimates, the Hydrow is a well-crafted, high-end piece of equipment, providing smooth rowing, a choice of electromagnetic drag levels, and an ergonomically designed cushioned roller system for comfort. We also love that it comes with wheels, so you can move it around your house if you need to find a quieter spot to excercise. And for smaller homes and apartments, you can purchase the Upright Storage Kit to keep the Hydrow from taking up precious living space.

To help you get in the mood, Hart hosts a live monthly row titled “RowWithHart” on the second Saturday of each month which members can join online, and the commentary is exactly what you’d expect from the outspoken and hysterical actor (yeah, there’s some cursing, what of it?). But if you’re looking to stick to the professionals, you can choose to workout with one of the other Hydrow athletes, like Olympian rower Aquil Abdullah, D1 collegiate rower Mac Evans and U.S. National Triathlon athlete Nick Karwoski, to name just a few.

Ready to get into the rowing spirit? Here are the three Hydrow packages to choose from if you’d like to participate in this healthy lifestyle choice.
