The Hungry Hatch food truck opening KC MO restaurant
The Hungry Hatch food truck had a five-month run in the Parlor food hall in the East Crossroads.
It signed a year lease in October but closed in March because of staffing issues and COVID-19 restrictions.
Now the owner said it is scheduled to open by the end of the month in a permanent spot in the City Market, 23 E. Third St. The Bite formerly operated in the space.
Angela Macie said she is excited to bring her healthy menu concept to the market.
“We already shop the City Market for produce for the food truck. And just the energy and vibrancy there. The City Market is so fun,” she said.
City Market officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Macie started her food truck in 2019 to offer mostly gluten-free options. But she also has meals that fit dietary plans such as keto, paleo, Mediterranean, The Whole30 Program, vegetarian and vegan.
Customers pick a wrap, salad or bowl (rice or quinoa), then they can select one of The Hungry Hatch’s specially designed mix of toppings.
For example, The Harvest comes with sweet potatoes, spring mix, black beans, grilled peppers and onions, while The Italian has shredded chicken, spring mix, sun-dried tomatoes, sliced black olives and mozzarella cheese.
The Indian, one of the most popular items, has coconut, curry, bok choy, carrots and red peppers but only comes as a bowl.
City Market hours are shorter than the food hall, so that will help with staffing issues. Macie said she wasn’t making a profit at Parlor with the pandemic and winter weather.
“The rent and percentage is pretty high. But for someone more established than myself it probably would be a fair rent,” she said.
