TALK Greenville March 2021 Editor’s Letter from Kim Hassold

This month we spent a lot of time on the subject of health. More specifically, good health and how to get it, keep it, and spread the word on both.

While a lot of benefits can come from learning about a healthy lifestyle, it seems that inevitably some of us will find a way to focus on what the world tells us about how “healthy” should look.

I’m the first to admit that I’ve fallen into that endless and unsatisfying trap myself. During the dreaded early teenaged years, my long, skinny legs were the bane of my existence, leaving gangly me with nowhere to hide in the midst of a lot of petite girls with seemingly perfect dimensions. Yes, I was forever that girl standing in the back of every single class photo.

Endless comments like “do you play basketball?” (no). “Can you find jeans long enough?” (yes) and “what’s the weather like up there?” (same as yours) led to many a tear during those years. There’s been a lot of water under the bridge since then and it’s only with a lot of well-earned perspective that I can say I owe my legs a sincere apology. They’re still far from perfect, but in retrospect, I have not come close to appreciating where they have literally taken me.
