Olivia Munn’s Skincare Routine for Healthy, Glowing Skin at 40

At 40, Olivia Munn’s skin glows. The actress told Byrdie that she’s spent a great deal of time learning about what it takes to “keep her skin looking young and healthy.”

After being diagnosed with fibromyalgia, a neurologic condition that causes symptoms like chronic pain and fatigue, Munn transformed her lifestyle. As she overhauled her diet and fitness routine, she also learned the importance of taking care of herself and her skin, no matter what.

“I’ve found that when I designate the time to do this for myself, it makes such a huge difference,” she told People in a new interview. “I’m really good at making the time to do it and I enjoy my skincare routine now.”

Her simple routine involves hydrating serums, eye creams, and lots of SPF. Read on for all of the ways Munn keeps her complexion healthy and radiant at 40.

1. She never sleeps with makeup on.

While Munn is a big fan of getting her glam on, the actress always makes sure her skin is clean and makeup-free before bed. “Your skin gets really dry if you don’t wash your makeup off,” she told Byrdie. She’s a fan of Proactiv’s Cleansing Wipes to get that initial layer off. “Proactiv’s [wipes] are a little soapy and remove everything when I don’t feel like washing my face,” she said. (Worth noting: Munn was previously a spokesperson for Proactiv.)

2. Hydrating serums, eye creams, and face masks are her skincare superheroes.

Munn’s rule of thumb when it comes to her skincare routine? “It’s basically the thinnest to the thickest,” she told People of how she applies her products. “I love trying new products. But I would get overwhelmed because I wouldn’t really know the order. Remembering ‘thinnest to thickest’ makes it easier.”

But no matter which step she’s on, hydration is a main theme in the products she reaches for. After a cleanse, Munn swears by the Dior Capture Totale Serum, which features skin-plumping hyaluronic acid and calming niacinamide.

For eye cream, she alternates between La Mer’s The Eye Concentrate and Proactiv’s Eye Brightening Serum. “It’s the one thing I have to have when I travel,” she told Byrdie of Proactiv’s product. “I put it on at night and wake up looking refreshed. You can use it during the day as well because it reflects light.”

When Munn’s skin calls for deeper hydration, the actress applies Youth To The People’s Yerba Mate Resurfacing Energy Facial, which contains fruit-derived enzymes, micro-exfoliants from bamboo and diatomaceous earth, and caffeine extracts to smooth and brighten the skin’s texture.

3. Sunscreen is must.

You won’t find Munn out with no sunscreen on. The actress said she uses Proactiv’s Daily Oil Control SPF 30, a lightweight sunscreen that’s free of oil and fragrance.

And when it comes to treating those pesky dark spots caused by too much sun, she uses Proactiv’s Dark Spot Corrector Pads. “I have freckles and I love my freckles, but you can start to get sunspots where your freckles are and they start to group together, which really prohibits your skin from reflecting light, which I think everyone wants because it gives a youthful look,” Munn told Byrdie.

4. She’s thoughtful about her diet.

Munn revealed to People that she was diagnosed with fibromyalgia two years ago, which led her to overhaul her lifestyle. “When I was diagnosed, I had to change what I consumed, and I had to be super thoughtful about what I put into my body,” she said. “I had to start eating gluten-free, dairy-free and I had to cut out a lot of things that I was used to having every day and things that I really loved.”

She also started drinking three liters of water a day, which she also credits for improving the overall look of her skin. “I think the biggest thing is I upped my water intake,” Munn told Byrdie of her beauty routine. “You need water to look young and to lubricate your joints and your face. And you need hyaluronic acid to help carry that water to your skin.”

5. She meditates to reduce stress.

Munn told People that she meditates with an app called Muse to reduce keep her stress levels at bay. “You listen to an app of ocean waves and as you’re listening to it, if your brain is calm and you’re not thinking of anything, you’ll hear everything get really quiet and you’ll hear birds chirping,” she said. “Once your brain starts thinking about things unconsciously, you’ll start to recognize that the ocean wave sounds start crashing louder and the wind sounds start picking up.”

“You’re like, ‘Oh wait, that’s what’s going on. Hold on, I’m thinking too much,’” she added. “Then you try to go back into a very neutral state of mind where you’re thinking about nothing and then everything calms down again.”
