NBA World Reacts To Major LaMarcus Aldridge News
Last season, LaMarcus Aldridge announced his retirement from the NBA because of an irregular heartbeat. It was a heartbreaking way for the former No. 2 overall pick’s career to end.
“My last game, I played while dealing with an irregular heartbeat,” Aldridge wrote. “Later on that night, my rhythm got even worse which really worried me even more. The next morning, I told the team what was going on and they were great getting to the hospital and getting me checked out. Though I’m better now, what I felt with my heart that night was still one of the scariest things I’ve experienced.”
Despite that heart scare back in April, it turns out Aldridge will be making his return to the hardwood later this year. Shams Charania of The Athletic announced on Thursday that Aldridge has been cleared to play.
Aldridge is expected to sign with the Brooklyn Nets now that he has full medical clearance, which makes sense considering he was on their roster before he announced his retirement.
If Aldridge does join the Nets for the 2021-22 season, he’ll have a great chance to add a championship ring to what is already a Hall of Fame résumé.
“LaMarcus Aldridge is healthy and back doing the thing that he loves most, and that’s tremendous news for him and for basketball,” Tom Petrini of KENS 5 said. “Plus, if he wants to add a ring to his already stellar career, that Nets team isn’t a bad option.”
Of course, the basketball community is more concerned about Aldridge’s health than his chances of winning the NBA Finals.
“Hope he really is cleared for play,” NBA writer Joe Viray tweeted. “But assuming good health, that frontcourt depth is gonna give the Nets a lot of options and combinations to work with.”
Assuming the Nets are able to sign Aldridge to their roster, that would mark the second acquisition of the day for them. Earlier this morning, it was announced that Paul Millsap is joining the squad.
During his brief run with the Nets last season, Aldridge averaged 12.8 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.
The Nets should be considered the favorites to win the Eastern Conference next season.
