Name: Jimmy Oberbroeckling
Parents: Joe and Alice Oberbroeckling
School: Roncalli High School
Grade: Senior
GPA: 3.98
What extracurricular activities have you been involved with during high school? Soccer, football, student government
What is one academic accomplishment about which you feel particularly good? Simply being able to attain such a high GPA while also being able to play varsity sports, participate in leadership activities and maintain healthy friendships.
Which class or extracurricular activity influenced your decision regarding the career you plan to pursue? The extracurricular activity that influenced me to decide to major in civil engineering and then join the Army is soccer. Though it does not relate much to civil engineering, soccer relates a lot to the Army in terms of teamwork. It is something I value so much in my life now. The Army would be the perfect way for me to be able to keep that sense of a team, even when beginning my career outside of school.
What advice do you have for those just starting their high school career? My advice for those just starting their high school career is that the best way to have a positive high school experience is to try every opportunity that is presented to you. If your life is solely focused on school or a sport or whatever entertains you, you are cutting yourself short in many areas. In addition to this, listening will be one of your best tools available. This tool goes beyond just the classroom. It can apply to any situation that you may be experiencing. By listening to others, you gain their knowledge on a topic in addition to your own. It helps create you into a well-rounded, experienced individual and will carry you far.
What are your plans after high school? To attend college and study to be either a civil or mechanical engineer. In college, I will join the Army through an Army ROTC program as well. After college, I will be either a civil or mechanical engineer and begin my career in the military.
What would you like to be doing 10 years from now? I would like to be continuing my Army career. In addition to this, I hope to be starting a family as well. At that point, I hope to know that the career path and the lifestyle that I have chosen is the correct one for myself.
Teacher recommendation: “James ‘Jimmy’ Oberbroeckling is an absolutely amazing individual. He has challenged himself at Roncalli since day one. I would describe him as being the ultimate competitor. It does not matter if the competition involves academics or athletics, he always wants to excel and be the best he can possibly be. He is the embodiment of being a true leader. He understands it is not what people say that matters, but rather it is what you do that shows you are willing to lead by example and be held accountable to those high standards. I will miss his presence at Roncalli immensely, but I know his future will certainly be one of success and achievement.” — Anthony Mack, Broadfield Social Studies teacher
