Magneto Teases an Evil Plan Using Marvel’s Omega-Level Mutants
The latest issue of Way of X revealed that Magneto has an ominous plan in play that could usher the former X-Men villain back to his sinister ways.

Perhaps no mutant has switched allegiances as often as Magneto. The Master of Magnetism has been an ally and member of the X-Men as often as he’s been their enemy. While he stands with them now as a leader of Krakoa there are ominous signs that he could be returning to his destructive ways.
In Way of X #2, David Haller’sLegion, the massively powerful and mentally unstable son of Charles Xavier, lost control of his many alternate personalities after an attack by the anti-mutant organization known as Orchis. In order to free David from the torment and prevent his powers from being unleashed in a potentially devastating manner, Nightcrawler killed him so that the Five could resurrect him into a healthy new body he could control. After his resurrection, Magneto told David about a project he has been working on with other Omega-level mutants. He offers Legion the chance to join the project. David curtly refuses, adding that he doesn’t trust Magneto. And when Professor X steps in to support his friend, Legion declares that he doesn’t trust his father either.

In the Dawn of X era, Magneto’s main priorities have been ensuring the continued safety and prosperity of Krakoa, but his resentment towards the human race is not gone. He still holds a lot of distrust and anger towards humans for their discrimination against mutants, which makes this new project concerning to say the least. Although he’s downright saint-like in comparison with some of the other villains Xavier and company have allied themselves with, Magneto will likely always remain the most controversial mutant in the world. To many of the mutants on Krakoa, he is a great protector, he’s the ultimate frenemy to the X-Men, and he is the personification of every mutant-hating human’s worst prejudices and fears. Even the perception that Magneto has returned to his aggressive villainous ways could lead humans to launch open attacks on Krakoa in an effort to end the bold new era the mutants are enjoying.
The fact that Xavier seems fully aware of whatever Magneto’s plans are demonstrates how the former’s ideology has changed to more closely resemble his friend and former rival’s. Since Krakoa was formed, Xavier has seemingly given up on his hopes for a world in which mutants and humans live together in peace and started focusing solely on mutants’ needs, at least for the time being. Leading Krakoa has made Charles ideologically and personally corrupt, as shown by the shady practices of the Quiet Council, the cult-like tendencies the Krakoans indulge in and his siding with Magneto over his own son. While Charles has never been a good father to David and is a deeply flawed leader and mentor, this is a new low.
Set to go on trial for murder following the Hellfire Gala, Magneto seems destined to upset the delicate balance mutantkind has achieved. It’s quite possible that whatever this mysterious project is will be directly involved, and it may be up to David to stop him. But while his reality-warping abilities mean that he dwarfs Magneto in terms of raw power David’s mental illness is a major Achilles’ heel that makes him unstable.
Fortunately, Legion has a newfound partner in Nightcrawler. The teleporter entered David’s mind in an attempt to help him earlier in the issue and because of that experience he knows about Kurt’s own doubts about Krakoa’s morality. This makes him the only mutant on the island David trusts and the righteous, kind-hearted X-Man is an excellent choice of confidant. It’s possible this unlikely duo is all that stands between mutantkind and disaster, but they may have to overthrow the mutants’ most beloved leaders in order to save them.
