Lamar native promotes healthy living through health and wellness day

Frontline workers have seen firsthand how the coronavirus pandemic has affected thousands of people. This is no different for Lamar native and nurse practitioner Dianne Hicks.

“Just being in the middle of the pandemic. Having to be a part of when we had to let loved ones know that we couldn’t save their loved one or just being there simply for the times we had to do compressions. We had loved ones that really didn’t believe their loved one had a pandemic. It brings tears to my eyes to this day,” said Hicks.

Hicks said she felt it was her duty to step up and help people fight this virus in her hometown.

“It had affected me in a way that I felt that I was needed. Just to be in the communities, letting everybody know that if we get to herd immunity it’s very important that could help save the lives of others,” said Hicks.

On Saturday, Hicks and the Town of Lamar decided to team up and host a health and wellness day for the community.

Booths with free PPE, mental health resources, and the COVID-19 vaccine were all available for those who stopped by.

Angela Jacobs is the founder of Walking Warriors, a walking group in the area. She held a large community walk ahead of the event to get people’s blood pumping.

She saw Saturday as not only a great way to promote healthy living but to bring the Lamar community together.

“We wanted an opportunity to bring women together and really point out the importance of health and wellness and understanding it doesn’t take a lot to get that done,” said Jacobs.

She encouraged people even after Saturday’s health and wellness day to take that first step to live a healthier life because that decision may end up saving it.

“We only have one life to live and if we take one step in order to become healthier, I think that would be a benefit to all of us,” said Jacobs.

Hicks said she plans to continue hosting health and wellness days so more people in Lamar will get access to those important resources.
