Justin Herbert is not in line to see any preseason action, Jeff Miller of the Los Angeles Times reports.Coach Brandon Staley will elect to play it safe with his young franchise QB, with an eye toward having Herbert healthy and fresh for Week 1 action. As a result, Chase Daniel, Easton Stick and K.J. Costello are slated to share the team’s preseason signal-caller reps.

Chargers’ Justin Herbert: Centerpiece of new offense
Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley wants the offense to “run through Justin Herbert,” according to Hayley Elwood of the team’s official website.Formerly the Rams’ defensive coordinator, Staley figures to primarily focus on the other side of the ball, yet he clearly understands that Herbert is his most important player by a mile. The fifth overall pick from the 2020 draft set an NFL rookie record with 31 passing touchdowns, also adding five additional scores (and 234 more yards) on the ground. Herbert will again have Keenan Allen, Mike Williams and RB Austin Ekeler at his disposal this season, while Jared Cook is replacing Hunter Henry (Patriots) as the top tight end. Perhaps most important, the Chargers added three new starters for the offensive line, signing center Corey Linsley and LG Matt Feiler before using a first-round pick on Northwestern LT Rashawn Slater. The unit may need some time to gel, but it’s the best collection of blocking talent the Chargers have put together in years. Offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi couldn’t have asked for a better situation, getting his second shot as an OC after a respectable stint with the Lions in 2014-15.

Justin Herbert completed 22 of 31 pass attempts for 302 yards and three touchdowns in Sunday’s 38-21 win over the Chiefs. He also carried the ball six times for nine yards and an additional score.Herbert ends the season with NFL rookie records for most passing touchdowns (31), most total touchdowns (36), most completions (396), most 300-yard games (eight) and most games with multiple passing touchdowns (10). He was also 39 yards shy of setting the single-season record for most passing yards by a rookie. Those accolades become all the more impressive when considering the 22-year-old started only 15 games, losing out the training-camp battle to veteran Tyrod Taylor before an unfortunate medical accident pressed the rookie into action. The main question to be answered in 2021 will be if Herbert can continue this type of production with a new coordinator and head coach, or if the Los Angeles Chargers will opt to bring back Anthony Lynn for one more season despite numerous strategical gaffes during his tenure in that role. Whatever does end up happening on the coaching side of things, it’s clear Herbert has cemented himself as one of the top young quarterbacks in the NFL.

The rookie QB had been in somewhat of a yardage slump by his lofty standards, as he’d fallen short of the 300-yard mark in two straight games after eclipsing the figure in six of his first 10 career contests. However, a back-and-forth affair that culminated in an extra period offered the 22-year-old just enough opportunity to get back to a hefty tally through the air Thursday. Herbert has paid off handsomely in both a real-world and fantasy sense during a prolific first season as a pro and he’ll look to continue his momentum against the Broncos in a Week 16 matchup Sunday, Dec. 27.

Justin Herbert completed 36 of 44 attempts for 243 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in Sunday’s 20-17 win over the Falcons.An injury to Mike Williams (back) early in the contest forced the Los Angeles Chargers to turn their offense into a dink and dunk system to little success as Austin Ekeler and Keenan Allen absorbed 20 targets between the two players. Herbert appeared to throw a back-breaking interception with 53 seconds left in the contest and the Chargers near the midfield mark, but his defense came up with a pick just three plays later to set up the rookie’s first game-winning drive of his career. Despite a bit of an underwhelming performance considering the matchup, Herbert should have plenty of success next week against a dismal Raiders pass defense.

Justin Herbert completed 26 of 53 pass attempts for 209 yards and two interceptions during Sunday’s 45-0 loss to the Patriots.Herbert completed less than half of his pass attempts and averaged a dismal 3.9 yards per attempt. He threw interceptions on back-to-back drives to start the third quarter with his team down big and failed to throw a touchdown pass for the first time in his young career. Herbert had an excellent 8:2 TD:INT over his previous four games and should bounce back next Sunday in an inviting matchup with the Falcons.

The end result saw the rookie post his sixth game with at least 300 passing yards and a touchdown, but the gaudy yardage total masked what was an overall lackluster effort from the Los Angeles Chargers offense. The rookie relied heavily on the newly healthy Austin Ekeler (hamstring) as opposed to Keenan Allen or Mike Williams, but that might have been by design thanks to the Bills’ aggressive secondary. It won’t get much easier next week when the Chargers host a suddenly lively Patriots defense.

A bevy of inaccurate throws stalled the Los Angeles Chargers’ offense all game long, but the final nail in the coffin came when Herbert stared down his intended target early in the fourth quarter and threw a drive-ending interception, setting up the Dolphins for an easy touchdown to take a two-score lead. A fairly run-oriented approach from both sides kept the passing opportunities in check, but it was still surprising to see Keenan Allen and Mike Williams fail to get involved, with the latter registering his first reception early in the second half. On a positive note, the Chargers can look forward to a matchup against the hapless Jets next week.
