Jindal joins Trump-aligned think tank to tackle healthcare
2 min readThe “America First” think tank associated most with former President Donald Trump today plans to announce that it is expanding further into policy in a big way with the appointment of former Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal to lead its healthcare arm.
Officials said the America First Policy Institute will announce that Jindal, a noted healthcare policy expert, will head its Center for a Healthy America.
“The American people have a once in a lifetime champion in Governor Jindal and we are so blessed to have him as a part of the America First family,” said AFPI President and CEO Brooke Rollins.
Joining Jindal will be Dr. Heidi Overton, a physician with experience in research and healthcare policy. She will be the center’s director.
Jindal called the AFPI a “powerhouse” and talked broadly about his goals. “To put it frankly — the healthcare system in our country doesn’t work and exposes chronic policy failure not seen in many other areas of governance. We must adopt solutions that result in better care, more choice, and lower costs for Americans,” he said in a statement.
The former governor has long focused on healthcare and was often called upon to offer alternatives to liberal policies, including Obamacare.
As part of the announcement, the Center also produced its first white paper on the issue and called for more doctor involvement in healthcare and insurance and less political meddling. That paper is shown below.
The center plans to push for lower-cost alternatives to government programs and tackle issues of concern to Americans, such as high drug prices.
Rollins said, “High healthcare costs, limited options, and variable quality of care are concerns for families across the country — the American people deserve better. I look forward to the work the Center for a Healthy America will do to ensure patients and doctors, not government and bureaucrats, are in control of their health as we work together to achieve a healthier America that values individuals, choices, and liberty.”
