Cowboys’ Jaylon Smith: Stacks up nine stops
Jaylon Smith recorded nine tackles (six solo) in Sunday’s 20-17 overtime win against the Chargers. After logging 25 percent of the snaps and four tackles in Week 1, the tables flipped in Week 2 when Micah Parsons was moved to defensive end following DeMarcus Lawrence’s foot injury. Smith handled 75 percent of the snaps against the Chargers and was back to his usual self. It may be difficult to keep guessing on his usage, but he’s worth holding onto for IDP purposes, as he posted 296 tackles between the 2019 and 2020 seasons.

Cowboys’ Jaylon Smith: Losing grip on starting role
Jaylon Smith may not be in line for a starting role at linebacker this season, Jon Machota of The Athletic reports.Whether a defensive player starts or not doesn’t always matter a great deal in the modern era as teams shift frequently between packages, but based on usage in training camp and the preseason, Smith appears to be fourth on the overall linebacker depth chart for the Dallas Cowboys behind Leighton Vander Esch, first-round pick Micah Parsons and free-agent signing Keanu Neal. The latter seems locked into a role on passing downs and Parsons’ impressive play in camp has had him on the field in all situations, which leaves Smith fighting for early-down work with Vander Esch. Both returning veterans have been IDP studs when healthy in their Dallas careers, but Smith in particular could be in danger of having his tackle numbers crater simply due to a lack of snaps. His own poor play in preseason action isn’t making much of a case for a bigger workload either, and were it not for his contract, the 26-year-old might not have a roster spot waiting for him at all.

Cowboys’ Jaylon Smith: Seeing first-team reps
Jaylon Smith (wrist) took a majority of the first-team reps at linebacker during OTAs, Jon Machota of The Athletic reports.Although it’s a good sign that Smith was back with his teammates, Machota points out that fans shouldn’t read to much into him receiving the first-team reps, as the coaching staff has kept veterans and rookies together for much of the offseason work. Smith underwent wrist surgery this offseason, coupled with the team drafting Micah Parsons in the first round of the 2021 Draft, signs that point to a decreased role for Smith heading into 2021 and potentially beyond. The Notre Dame product racked up 154 tackles (89 solo) and 1.5 sacks last season and hopes to be a full-go for training camp.

Cowboys’ Jaylon Smith: Headed for wrist surgery
Jaylon Smith will undergo surgery on his left wrist, Todd Archer of ESPN reports. The linebacker showed up on the injury report Week 16 with a wrist issue and was able to play through it, but it will apparently require addressing in the offseason. He should be fully recovered in time for OTAs, however. While Smith racked up a career-high 154 tackles over 16 games in 2020 to lead the Dallas Cowboys, adding five passes defended, two fumble recoveries, 1.5 sacks and an INT, he was frequently out of position and made too many of those tackles downfield rather than near the line of scrimmage. With Dallas hiring a new defensive coordinator in Dan Quinn and needing cap space for Dak Prescott, it’s possible Smith is no longer seen as a piece of the puzzle in the long term and becomes a cap casualty despite the five years remaining on his current contract.

Cowboys’ Jaylon Smith: Double-digit tackles again
Jaylon Smith recorded 11 tackles (six solo) and added a QB hit and a fumble recovery in Sunday’s win over the Eagles. The linebacker has produced double-digit tackles in four straight games and nine of 15 this season, powering Smith to a new career high with 144 tackles. He figures to be in the thick of the action again in Week 17 against the Giants.

Cowboys’ Jaylon Smith: Stacks up 10 stops
Jaylon Smith posted 10 tackles (five solo) in Sunday’s 41-33 win over the 49ers.Smith recorded double-digit tackles for the eighth time in 14 games, and he has now recorded 133 tackles (second in the league). The Notre Dame standout is on track to surpass last year’s career high of 142 tackles at some point over the final two games.

Cowboys’ Jaylon Smith: Big numbers again Sunday
Jaylon Smith recorded a team-high 11 tackles (eight solo) with one pass defended and one fumble recovery in Sunday’s win over the Bengals.Cincy fumbled the ball on each of its first three possessions, with Smith jumping on one to set up an Amari Cooper touchdown in the second quarter. The linebacker has picked up double-digit tackles in two straight games and seven of 13 this season, and he needs just 20 more in the Dallas Cowboys’ final three contests to set a new career high.

Cowboys’ Jaylon Smith: Leading tackler in loss
Jaylon Smith recorded 12 tackles (seven solo) in Tuesday’s loss to the Ravens. As expected, Baltimore attacked a weak Dallas run defense all night and racked up a massive 294 rushing yards, creating IDP value for Smith even if his efforts didn’t do much to influence the final outcome. The linebacker could be busy again in Week 14’s clash with a Bengals team hoping to get Joe Mixon (foot) back in the lineup.

Cowboys’ Jaylon Smith: Grabs first INT of season
Jaylon Smith recorded five tackles (one solo) and an interception in Thursday’s loss to Washington. While he set a new season low in tackles — and registered his fourth straight game in single digits — Smith salvaged his IDP value on the afternoon with his first pick of the year. He nearly returned it for a touchdown but got tackled short of the goal line after being caught from behind by Terry McLaurin. Smith has already topped 100 tackles for the third straight campaign, and he could be busy in Week 13’s road tilt against a Ravens offense that typically features a ground-heavy game plan.

Cowboys’ Jaylon Smith: Racks up double-digit tackles again
Jaylon Smith piled up 12 tackles (six solo) in Sunday’s loss to Washington. While the linebacker has drawn flak in recent weeks for an apparent lack of hustle on some big plays by the opposition, there’s been no doubting his IDP value. Smith has recorded double-digit tackles in three straight games and five of seven overall this season, and even the return of Leighton Vander Esch to full duty this week didn’t cut into Smith’s production. With the Dallas Cowboys down multiple starters along the offensive line and potentially forced to use third-string quarterback Ben DiNucci in Week 8 against the Eagles, there’s no reason to think the beleaguered Dallas defense will be less busy any time soon, providing Smith with plenty of opportunities for more tackles.
