Fall Camp Day 1 – Jimmy Lake News And Notes

Day one of Washington’s 2021 fall camp is in the books. Here’s some news and notes from what head coach Jimmy Lake had to say following the two-hour workout…

  • Said the team is excited and that the players are ramped up and ready to go.
  • Said it’s been cool to see everyone pick up on the tempo they have established and making sure everyone was staying healthy.
  • Miki Ah You and Will Latu are both gone from the program while dealing with some family issues. Lake said that the door is not closed for Latu and Ah You to return, but they do not expect them to be part of the program this fall.
  • He said that Zion Tupuola-Fetui is way ahead of schedule and that he has beaten all the benchmarks and that he will be able to play during the regular season this fall.
  • Lake said that ZTF has been attacking the weight room and that it’s been awesome to watch and for the team to see how you attack your rehab and do all of the things necessary to get your body back healthy.
  • Said that ZTF had the right set of mind of how to get back as quickly as possible.
  • Lake was asked about Elijah Jackson’s interception and his progress and he said that he has continued to work hard and you’re starting to see the fruits of that hard work.
  • Said he’s proud of the fact that the team is over 95% vaccinated and said that they lay out the facts for the players and coaches who are then expected to make their own decisions. They support the player’s and coaches’ decisions not to get vaccinated because you can’t force someone to put something in their body.
  • Also noted that the school’s requirement of being vaccinated in order to be on campus doesn’t go into effect until Fall Quarter.
  • On his feelings about the safety position, Lake said that there are veterans who have played a lot, but there are other guys who are making progress. Pointed out the Dominique Hampton and Julius Irvin have started to make some plays and he’s excited to see their progress.
  • Asked about what Asa Turner needs to do to take that next step, Lake said he flashed today and that he needs to play faster than the younger guys. He noted that Williams is in the same boat.
  • As far as the defensive line is concerned, he said that Tuli Letuligasenoa and Sam Taimani need to be the leaders because they’ve played the most. He said the room is very talented, but it’s untested for the most part and they have a month to get them ready.
  • Jimmy Lake said that Dylan Morris is the starter and it’s settled in his mind, but if he slips and doesn’t play well, just like another position, he has a chance to be replaced. He said the two guys behind him are very, very talented, but they are behind him at this point.
  • Lake said that because he’s played four college football games, that’s been a big boost for him and his confidence.
  • Lake said that quarterbacks have to be great decision-makers and have the confidence to make adjustments pre-snap and go through his reads after the ball is snapped. He said repetitions, practices and film sessions and the more you do those things, quarterbacks should get better.
  • Lake said that Huard was much more comfortable today from what he saw and that every day he should be feeling more comfortable. He’s better today than he was in the spring and he expects him to be better in the season than he is in fall camp. It’s a process.
  • Asked about the running backs and said that they have a lot of depth at running back and if they have someone go down, they can throw a different guy in there and have no dropoff.
  • Lake noted that Richard Newton is lean and fast and that it is fair to say he will get a lot of carries.
  • On Dominique Hampton, Lake said he’s got all of the physical tools to be great, but now they need to trust that he knows his assignments and understands what they were trying to do. Once he does that, he should be playing a lot.
  • Asked about Giles Jackson, Lake said he looks fast and as he gets more comfortable, he will be an explosive playmaker for the team.
  • Lake said that Carson Bruener is now inside with the loss of Ah You and Latu, but that he swing between outside linebacker and inside linebacker pretty easily.
