49ers’ Elijah Mitchell: Breaks Week 1 rookie record
Elijah Mitchell rushed 19 times for 104 yards and a touchdown in Sunday’s 41-33 win over Detroit.Raheem Mostert (knee) went down to injury early in the contest, so Mitchell took over as the bell cow and had himself a fantastic Week 1. The sixth-round pick found himself in this position after fellow rookie Trey Sermon (who was drafted three rounds ahead of him) was a surprising healthy scratch. The only other healthy back on the roster, JaMycal Hasty, only received one carry and was used primarily as a receiving back. Mitchell certainly proved that he could handle starting duties against the Eagles next Sunday, but whether he gets that opportunity largely hinges on Mostert’s Week 2 status.

49ers’ Elijah Mitchell: Playing over Sermon in opener
Elijah Mitchell is one of three running backs active Sunday for San Francisco’s season opener in Detroit, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports. The fact that Mitchell, a rookie sixth-round pick, is dressing for Week 1 is probably less of a surprise than the fact that third-round rookie Trey Sermon is in street clothes, considering that Sermon had been operating as the No. 2 back for most of training camp and the preseason. It’s unclear if Sermon’s healthy scratch is specific to the San Francisco 49ers’ Week 1 game plan or something that will carry over to future contests, but regardless, Mitchell and JaMycal Hasty will be on hand as the reserve options behind Raheem Mostert in the opener. While Mostert is expected to dominate the snaps and touches among the San Francisco backs, Mitchell and Hasty are both expected to see some involvement on offense, especially if the game turns non-competitive in the second half.

49ers’ Elijah Mitchell: Makes preseason debut
Elijah Mitchell rushed six times for 24 yards in Sunday’s 34-10 preseason win over the Raiders.Mitchell was serviceable in his first appearance as a pro. However, with Raheem Mostert, Trey Sermon, JaMycal Hasty and Wayne Gallman all excelling Sunday, it remains to be seen whether the rookie sixth-rounder has done enough to make the Niners’ roster for Week 1’s matchup against the Lions.

49ers’ Elijah Mitchell: Back at practice
Elijah Mitchell (hip) returned to practice Wednesday, Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.Mitchell was scratched prior to the San Francisco 49ers’ preseason opener against the Chiefs and had been sidelined until his return to the field Wednesday. He’s currently buried on the team’s depth chart, but he projects as an intriguing prospect. He was the second back taken by San Francisco in the 2021 NFL Draft, after third-round selection Trey Sermon.

49ers’ Elijah Mitchell: Will miss multiple weeks
Elijah Mitchell, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan, “will be out for a couple weeks” with an adductor strain, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.Mitchell was a surprise scratch from the roster for Saturday’s preseason opener against the Chiefs, and the reason for his absence is now known. He’s an intriguing prospect for the San Francisco 49ers, and one who could have made a preseason push, but he’s a bit down the depth chart, so it’s unlikely the team’s early season running back rotation will be altered significantly.

49ers’ Elijah Mitchell: Not anticipated to play Saturday
Elijah Mitchell is not expected to play in Saturday’s preseason opener against the Chiefs, according to Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle.Mitchell was able to take part in the San Francisco 49ers’ last practice session prior to Saturday’s contest, but he was listed among the players on the “Anticipated Will Not Play” list cited in the report. Regardless of the reason for Saturday’s absence, he should have a chance to see his first action as a professional in the 49ers’ second exhibition contest next Sunday against the Chargers.
