Children exposed to COVID-19 can stay in Palm Beach County schools

People line up in their cars to get a free COVID-19 test at a site outside the Gardens Branch Library in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida on August 18, 2021. The site is open 7 days a week from 9 am. to 5 pm.

Public school students exposed to COVID-19 no longer have to stay home from school if they appear healthy, Palm Beach County School Board members decided Wednesday.

By a 5-2 vote, board members endorsed Gov. Ron DeSantis’ new rule giving students the option to stay in school after close contact with a person with COVID-19, so long as they show no symptoms of the disease.

The new policy marks a drastic change in the way the county’s public schools deal with children exposed to the coronavirus.

Until now, students who had “close contact” with someone with COVID-19 — meaning being within 6 feet of them for more than 15 minutes — were required to remain home for at least four days regardless of whether they appeared sick.
