Boston Scott was not part of the game plan in Week 1 as Miles Sanders (47 snaps) and Kenneth Gainwell (25 snaps) shared the running back duties against the Falcons on Sunday.The rookie Gainwell was expected to take over the No. 2 role behind Sanders at some point this season, but Scott being kept on the sideline for the entirety of Week 1 is still surprising. The latter is arguably the biggest threat to Scott’s backup role, but the veteran will at least get a chance to defend it, following a 2020 campaign in which he averaged 5.0 yards on 80 carries and 8.5 yards on 25 receptions. Gainwell is also a smaller back with promising receiving skills, so it’ll be hard to find find steady roles for both him and Scott unless Sanders is injured or benched.

That said, there’s always the possibility of Philadelphia adding backfield competition this offseason, especially if the new coaching staff lacks confidence in Sanders and/or Scott.
