Boot Camp Express offers 45-minute quasi-military workout in Taylor | News
A new Taylor gym is ready to welcome those who want to exercise with some guidance, as well as those who want to stop in around-the-clock and get the workout down on their own terms.
Boot Camp Express, 7836 Telegraph Road, offers an automated high-intensity interval training (HIIT) program for individuals seeking healthy lifestyle changes.
Members can experience a quasi-military workout consisting of 20-timed stations, including a punching bag, tire flips, sled push, full sprints, cardio machines, monkey bars and more.
After one minute of exercise and a 30-second rest, a bell rings signaling the time for the next station.

Three lanes of green turf outline the space reserved for the high intensity interval training workout. During the 45-minute exercise interval, members move in between each station (punching bag, tire flip, monkey bar climbs, etc.) after the timer rings.
With over 100 feet of green turf across three lanes, the gym’s layout is much similar to a football practice field with features akin to a boxing gym. Classes are designed for more than 20 people to flow in unison in a 45-minute workout, while completing each drill.
On-site personal trainers can assist with demonstrating the entire boot camp experience and teaching members how the automation system works. This way, gym-goers can still utilize the boot camp drills anytime beyond normal staff hours, which are 7 a.m. until 10 p.m.
With the gym open 24/7, owner Don Larson says anyone could jump right in at Boot Camp Express without making class reservations.
“We don’t have class times,” Larson said. “If you get in here at 10:15, you can start it. If you get here at 2:30 in the morning, you can do this. It doesn’t matter; it’s all automated.”

Don Larson, owner of Boot Camp Express, demonstrates the tire flip exercise, one of 20 stations used in the 45-minute high intensity interval training workout. During this exercise, the muscle groups being engaged are the biceps, triceps, back, chest and hamstring.
Larson said he has over 10 years of personal training and ownership experience in the gym industry. He started working for Powerhouse Gym in St. Clair Shores, where he became one of the top trainers in Southeast Michigan. He also owns Gold’s Gym in Warren, which has a strength boxing program.
The concept and idea for Boot Camp Express was a few years in the making, based on previous designs. The official interior design and construction began in October. The gym opened Feb. 3.

“I built a gym in Denver for a financial investment firm,” Larson said. “It was 25,000 square feet. There was a 50-yard green, indoor and outdoor turf. It was one lane. I used that and turned it into a boot camp. I had a heavy bag, two boxing rings, yoga studio, and a kids club. My boot camp at that gym with one track was the most popular out of all the fitness concepts. That’s where I hashed out the idea.”
Despite the pandemic, Larson said Boot Camp Express’ launch wasn’t deterred from opening. He also feels optimistic about the gym industry bouncing back moving forward.
“I was going to do it at some point in my life,” he said. “I feel this is a safe environment for everybody. We want people to workout, stay healthy and supercharge your immune system by eating healthy and exercising properly.”
