Red Sox’s Austin Brice: Reaches deal with Red Sox
Austin Brice signed a one-year, $870,000 contract with the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday, avoiding arbitration, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.Brice was in his first year of arbitration eligibility this year, but he reached a new deal with the Red Sox prior to Wednesday’s deadline. The right-hander dealt with a lat injury in 2020 but still made 21 appearances (one start) for Boston. During that time, he posted a 5.95 ERA and 25:13 K:BB over 19.2 innings.

Red Sox’s Austin Brice: Returns from injured list
Austin Brice (lat) returned from the 10-day injured list Friday.Brice missed a little over two weeks with a strained right lat. He’s struggled to a 6.27 ERA and a 1.55 WHIP in 18.2 innings of work this season but could get another opportunity or two to change that before the end of the year.

Red Sox’s Austin Brice: Placed on injured list
Austin Brice was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right lat strain, retroactive to Aug. 9.Brice allowed two walks without a strikeout over a scoreless one-third of an inning Tuesday, and apparently sustained an injury during that appearance. It’s unclear whether the right-hander will return to action this year, with just over two weeks remaining in the regular season.

Red Sox’s Austin Brice: Works out of jam
Austin Brice struck out three over 1.1 scoreless innings in Sunday’s 5-3 win over the Blue Jays.Although Brice wasn’t credited with a hold, he deserved some kind of notoriety for the win. He entered in the seventh inning with two on, two out and got ended the threat. The right-hander then struck out the side in the eighth. After a shaky start to the season, Brice has not allowed a run or a hit while striking out eight over his last 5.1 innings. With both Josh Taylor (illness) and Darwinzon Hernandez (illness) unavailable, Brice could be deployed in high-leverage situations.

Red Sox’s Austin Brice: Scoreless inning as opener
Austin Brice allowed two walks and struck out three in a scoreless inning as the opener versus the Yankees on Sunday. He did not factor into the decision.A fielding error by Jose Peraza and Brice’s two walks created a bases-loaded situation, but the righty struck out Luke Voit to escape the jam. Brice has a 6.35 ERA and 1.41 WHIP in 5.2 innings this season, mostly as a reliever. The 28-year-old isn’t likely to enter the closer conversation any time soon.

Red Sox’s Austin Brice: Has first scoreless outing
Austin Brice struck out one and hit a batter over a scoreless inning in Friday’s 5-1 loss to the Yankees. This was Brice’s fourth appearance, the first in which he hasn’t allowed a run. The 28-year-old has permitted four runs on five hits, including two home runs, and a walk over 4.2 innings. Red Sox’s Austin Brice: Has strong spring
Austin Brice allowed three hits and one walk while striking out 10 over 6.2 scoreless Grapefruit League innings.Brice will likely make the roster for an eventual Opening Day based on his strong spring. That notion was reinforced when Boston relegated Colten Brewer to the minors. The 27-year-old right-hander has been more effective against same-sided batters during his career, but Brice holds his own against left-handed hitters. He’s expected to pitch the middle innings, including multiple-inning appearances.

Red Sox’s Austin Brice: Dominant in spring debut
Austin Brice (forearm) gave up a single and walk and fanned four hitters over 1.2 scoreless innings of relief Monday against the Rays in his Grapefruit League debut. While he was a member of the Marlins organization in 2019, Brice was shut down in August for the remainder of the season with a right forearm strain. He was then traded to Boston in January and apparently completed his rehab program without incident before reporting to spring training. The 27-year-old isn’t a lock to make Boston’s Opening Day bullpen, but he made a strong early case for a spot with Monday’s dominant showing.

Red Sox’s Austin Brice: Shipped off to Boston
Austin Brice (forearm) was traded from the Marlins to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for Angeudis Santos. He finished the season on the injured list with a right forearm strain and was then designated for assignment earlier this week. Boston apparently liked Brice enough to see what he has to offer this year in camp. He has a high-spin curveball and has had success against righties, so he could win a bullpen spot if he is fully healthy this spring.
