4 properties sold, donated to Jackson YMCA for new building
JACKSON, MI — The Jackson YMCA will close on four properties adjacent to its current location as part of its plan to expand with a new facility.
The YMCA’s new “healthy living campus” is being constructed on the same plot on Wesley Street in downtown Jackson, but on the northeast end of the current YMCA parking lot. The acquisitions of 121 W. Wesley St., 116 W. Franklin St., 105 W. Wesley St. and 400 S. Mechanic St., will extend the Y’s campus to 3.5 acres on the edge of residential and downtown Jackson.
The Y has raised close to $22 million toward the construction of a new facility, officials said. Leadership expects to break ground this summer.
“When we met with our neighbors, they were very supportive of our plans to expand our impact and work collaboratively,” Jackson YMCA CEO Shawna Tello said in a statement.
Two of the four lots, 105 W. Wesley St. and 400 S. Mechanic St., were donated to the Y, officials said. Alfred Bruey and his son, Don, said their family owned the building for 25 years and thought the decision to donate was easy because of the scope of the project.
“We are all aware of the Y’s contribution to the community. Contributing our property was a great way to help the Y continue and expand the good work they do,” Don Bruery said in a statement.
Trinity Lutheran Church, 121 W. Wesley St., agreed to sell a portion of a lot its owned since the 1970s for a “nominal amount.”
The congregation said it “looks forward to having a front-row seat while the new YMCA facility is being built,” according to a statement. “The impact on downtown Jackson will be significant, and we anticipate increased interactions with all our neighbors as well as the workers and contractors who will be on the job site.”
The Y plans to begin demolishing the structures on those parcels in June, officials said.
