When life throws a curveball your way, how do you respond? Frequently, we are faced with obstacles that may lead to signs of stress. Dealing with life stressors could have a negative impact on our mental and physical health. Stress is a natural occurrence that affects everyone from time to time. Learning ways to manage stress may be beneficial in the long run to improve overall wellbeing to lead a healthier lifestyle. In this week’s article, I would like to take the time to discuss life stressors and how to overcome them

Commonly, stress is defined as, emotional or physical tension. Stress could arise from day-today responsibilities and major life events, such as, death of a loved one, a diagnosis, war, loss of employment and more. Physical signs of stress may vary from person to person. Signs of stress may include increased heart rate, changes in appetite and behavior, difficulties sleeping, nervousness, depression and increased drug and alcohol use to name a few. Identifying ways to respond to stress can be difficult, but it is not impossible.

Mapping out strategies to improve how you respond to stress can be helpful. There are coping techniques that could be implemented to help reduce stress. These techniques may include meditating to relax the mind and body, taking breaks as needed, keeping a positive attitude, starting an exercise routine, getting enough rest at night, and limiting use of stimulants, including drugs and alcohol. Counseling, therapy or self-help groups may also be beneficial to reducing stress. Find a strategy that works for you.
