Five families in the Kansas City Missouri Police Athletic League are receiving a free $500 shopping spree. The spending happened Monday, all courtesy of physician and Chiefs lineman Laurent Duvernay-Tardif. “Having a healthy lifestyle is something that’s really important and not everybody, unfortunately, is able to afford all the equipment,” Duvernay-Tardif said. The O-lineman says the shopping is also a part of National First Responders Day. The NFL’s first dual player and medical doctor has been a first responder himself. He received national attention after opting out of last year’s football season to go back to his home in Canada and help fight COVID-19 “So many people work so hard throughout the pandemic,” Duvernay-Tardif said. Sgt Dion Rentie of the athletic league, recognizes all the good the player has already done both here and abroad. “Him taking a year off to help the medical field like, that’s huge,” Rentie said. The police athletic league is getting a special surprise as well, a $2500 check. “It helps us tremendously,” Rentie said. National First Responders Day is Thursday Oct. 28. Earlier this year, Duvernay-Tardif was awarded the Muhammad Ali Sports Humanitarian Award for his decision to help temporarily hang up his cleats and fight the COVID-19 pandemic as a physician.
