How BetterMe Can Help You Get Healthy in 2022

Around this time every year, you probably start thinking to yourself: “Is this the year my New Year’s resolution to get healthy finally sticks?” And sometime in mid-February, you remember that resolution somewhere around the second trip to the kitchen for some more nachos during the Super Bowl. This year can be different, though—if you become one of the 100 million people to download and use an app called BetterMe

BetterMe isn’t just a weight loss or an exercise app. It’s a behavioral healthcare, mobile-focused publisher that personalizes its content to make a healthy lifestyle as inclusive as possible. BetterMe recognizes that a healthier lifestyle doesn’t start with a 5K or a kettlebell swing—it starts by changing your mindset.

Before starting on changing your body, BetterMe works to help change how you see and accept yourself as you are, overcome any negative self-image you might have, and work on your resistance to change. Eventually, it moves you toward a feeling of self-compassion and having enough self-love to start working on your diet and fitness. That’s why BetterMe describes itself as “a holistic approach to physical well-being and mental health,” because it recognizes that you have to work on all of these things to be truly healthy.

Which is not to say that it doesn’t have a ton of in-app resources for the physical side of things. There are 1,500+ workouts plus step and calorie trackers (one of BetterMe’s main values is diversity and inclusion, so it created workouts specific to a variety of groups, including senior citizens and plus-size users). There are a variety of meal plans to help break you out of eternal-snacking-mode (including vegan and lactose-intolerant plans), plus there’s tracking for intermittent fasting, and even reminders of when to drink water (and how much). There’s also a “habit tracker” to help break bad ones and reinforce new good ones, 24/7 chat with a coach, and regular progress reports to help show how far you’ve come.

Like any health program, BetterMe knows that it’s the long-term behavior change that is the hardest to achieve, so it designed this to support you for up to a full year, starting with a tailored daily plan that you can complete in a few minutes each morning and feel the benefits of all day long. Utilizing things like quizzes, diaries, open-ended questions, and infographics, BetterMe helps you retrain your thinking using the programs created by its team of Cognitive Behavioral Therapists. It’s really like having a life coach and a personal trainer with you at all times.

The app is available for download via Apple’s App Store (it also integrates with Apple’s HealthKit) and on Google Play for Android phones, and can be used in over a dozen languages. After a free trial, a subscription is required; you can sign up to use it one week at a time, but for the most impact (and the greatest savings), committing to a year-long subscription is your best bet, and still cheaper than a couple visits to a personal trainer. Rather than having a bunch of different food, workout, and meditation apps on your phone, streamline everything into one place with BetterMe as you work towards an overall goal of better health.
