Broncos getting healthy for season opener vs. Giants

Here come the Broncos.

While the New York Giants ponder running back Saquon Barkley’s availability for the season opener on Sunday, Denver is getting healthy for the Week 1 showdown.

ESPN’s Jeff Legwold reports Broncos head coach Vic Fangio was asked about “whether TE Noah Fant and LB Bradley Chubb, who were held out of practice last week and returned to practice Monday, would be ready for season opener against Giants: ‘I think so, I think so.’”

According to the Broncos’ website, “both players participated in the team’s stretching period, before Chubb left to work on a side field during the media-viewing portion of practice. Fant participated in individual drills for the first time since before the Broncos’ game against the Seahawks on Aug. 21.”

Chubb is recovering from an ankle injury. The fourth-year linebacker recorded a career-best 12 sacks as a rookie in 2018. Fant is working his way back from a leg injury. The third-year tight end is primed for a breakout season after posting career highs in receptions (62) and receiving yards (673) last season.

In an unrelated Broncos note, Fangio named his captains for the 2021 season on Tuesday, according to Pro Football Talk: quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, linebacker Von Miller, safety Justin Simmons, safety Kareem Jackson, kicker Brandon McManus, and wide receiver Courtland Sutton.

The Broncos and Giants are set for a Week 1 kickoff Sunday at 4:25 p.m ET. Five days later, the Giants will visit the Washington Football Team for a prime-time NFC East showdown in Week 2 on Thursday Night Football.
