German Davis Cup team captain Sergei Bubka has confirmed that Alexander Zverev intends to represent his country at the ATP Cup in January. Zverev, ranked at No. 4 in the world, didn’t make himself available to Germany for this year’s Davis Cup Finals.
Zverev is healthy but he is boycotting the Davis Cup Finals because he doesn’t consider it to be the “real Davis Cup.” The ITF made changes to the Davis Cup format two years and since then Zverev hasn’t represented Germany in the competition.
“The format has to be changed and I’m sticking to that. I am someone who keeps his word. I want to win the Davis Cup, but I want to win the real Davis Cup,” the 24-year-old told a press conference on Saturday before the start of the ATP tournament in Vienna.
Zverev vaccinated and comfortable with the Australian Open rules
In Vienna, Zverev said that he is comfortable with whatever the Australian Open decides since he is vaccinated and won’t have any problems entering the country.
On Monday, the WTA sent a letter to players, revealing that unvaccinatined players will be allowed to play at the Australian Open but required to complete 14 days of hard quarantine. “Everyone has the right to decide for themselves,” Zverev said.
“The players who are not vaccinated probably won’t be allowed to play in Melbourne. And I understand that decision. For me, that’s not a problem.” Zverev never had problems with the position that the Australian government was taking.
“I fully respect the decisions of players that are not vaccinated. I also do respect the decision that the Australian government is giving,” Zverev said recently. “I don’t want to be in the middle of something which I kind of am not involved in because I don’t have that issue of the two-week quarantine, all that. I don’t want to go against anybody here.”
